francis harris exceptional run of releases for his own labels scissors & thread and kingdoms now extends to this perfectly formed ep for hafendisko, which sees him rework some of hfn musics finest moments of the last two years. harris, the brooklynite whose feel for subtlety and space seems to infuse all his work, takes on three of the hamburg labels cannon - kicked off with kasper bjorkes cloud 9, featuring urdur. here harris deconstructs the original and reforms it into a some quite removed from its origins - shuffling drum machines bring about a kraftwerkesque feel, before beautiful tones and atmospheres reveal themselves. the track seems to develop along two paths simultaneously, somehow creating a truly affecting piece of leftfield electronica. null + voids huge dave gahan-featuring-track where i wait has been heavily remixed over the past months, but also gets the harris treatment. completely flipped form the original, this is a haunting remix with tough and funky underbelly, utilizing gahans vocals only sparingly. danish alt-pop trio ticktock have their single hatefuck refixed also, and harris zones in on the glitchy vibe and adds layers of claustrophobic depth to the production.

this split lp compiles the output of two closely related bands from, as suggested by the title, the hot, humid and (at the time) socially isolated city of brisbane, australia – an unlikely location for synth-pop and new wave music during the 1980s. prod & the moonbaby were a high school duo experimenting with tape loops, cheap electronics and primitive sampling.. the result is certainly lo-fi, light-hearted and naive, but also charming and the music belies the young age of the musicians. ash in october was in many ways a logical progression of prod & the moonbaby and shared some of the same personnel, but also added some new wave influence through extra instrumentation and more serious, considered lyrics. most of these tracks have never been heard before outside a handful of self-distributed tapes and this compilation was compiled over several years by the artists in collaboration with hysteric and nick mariano (crispy nuggets).

nach dem überaus erfolgreichen start mit veröffentlichungen von konzerten aus dem legendären hamburger club onkel pÖ im frühjahr des jahres und dem überwältigenden presseecho setzt das label jazzline in zusammenarbeit mit dem norddeutschen rundfunk die reihe ab oktober 2017 fort. sie war eine der großen stimmen des soul und des blues: esther phillips. die viel zu früh verstorbene künstlerin tourte in den 50er und 60er jahren durch die blues clubs der vereinigten staaten. erst mit ihrem discohit what a difference a day makes wurde sie einem größeren publikum bekannt und erreichte den kommerziellen höhepunkt ihrer karriere. das vorliegende konzert aus dem hamburger onkel pö zählt zu einer ihrer letzten großen auftritte. das vom ndr aufgezeichnete konzert im „onkel pö“, mit kraftvollen begleitern in der band und sehr enthusiastischem publikum, dokumentiert auf gleich zwei cd’s die außergewöhnlichkeit dieser großartigen künstlerin. noch einmal gelingt die große verzauberung in diesem hamburger november des jahres 1978. esther phillips wird wenige wochen später erst 43 jahre alt. aber die zeit läuft ab – die 50 hat die sängerin schon nicht mehr erreicht. am 7. august 1984 ist sie gestorben. dieses zeitdokument ist ein „must have“!

the story of the great roots reggae harmony trio black uhuru is one defined by many unexpected twists and turns. in its best known form, led by michael rose and with founding member duckie simpson and the black american female vocalist, puma jones, the group would enjoy the greatest popularity of any act in the wake of bob marley’s untimely death in 1981, but the origins of the group lay in the turbulent waterhouse district during the mid-1970s. duckie first formed the group as uhuru, the swahili word for unity, with garth dennis as lead singer and don carlos to join him in harmony, after cutting an adaptation of the impressions’ “romancing to the folk song” at dynamics, “time is on our side” at randy’s for clive chin, and “slow coach” for raymond “benno” anderson, dennis drifted into the wailing souls and don carlos went solo, leading duckie to recruit rising waterhouse vocalist michael “tony” rose as lead singer, and errol nelson from the jays for harmony. their debut album, love crisis, was produced, voiced and mixed at king tubby’s studio by prince jammy and remains and outstanding example of jammy’s roots reggae production phase. the song “hard ground” vamps on a similar theme to marley’s “talking blues”: rose sings of a life of everyday hardship, with destitution and homelessness the pervading factors. on the extended dub portion and dub the instrumental cuts that follow the alternate vocal take of this enthralling 12-inch ep, you can hear the non-standard instrumentation that helps make the work so innovative, with winston wright’s harpsichord melody emphasising the hopelessness of rose’s emotive lyrics, the commanding rhythm and understated bass and guitar from robbie shakespeare and chinna smith completing the picture.

as bpmf started making techno again, he surveyed his techno friends asking them what it was about his music they found the most annoying. the answers? tr-606 hi-hats and portamento. he proceeded to focus on these aspects of his music and today the results are here: -abide the glide volume 4- wherein bpmf is pushing all the right buttons to get the dj thinking about the sounds their pumpin. jamie morris provides an excellent dj freindly remix of -even straighter-, taking bpmf s idea and going even straighter.

die r&b/soul-legende andre “mr rhythm” williams veröffentlicht mit “i wanna go back to detroit city” sein langerwartetes neues studioalbum. der 79-jährige amerikaner kann auf eine beachtliche karriere zurückblicken, williams, mittlerweile 79 jahre alt, ist seit den 50er jahren im musikgeschäft aktiv. er schrieb songs für u.a. parliament, funkadelic, stevie wonder, produzierte ike turner und managte soul-star edwin starr. er veröffentlichte alben und singles bei fortune records, epic, chess records und seit ende der 90er jahre auf bloodshot records. auf seinem fünften album für bloodshot liefert uns andre williams einen gelungenen potpourri aus psychedelic soul, r&b und blues. mit an bord sind u.a. dennis coffey (funk brothers), matthew smith (outrageous cherry, rodriguez), dan kroha (gories, demolition doll rods) und jim white (dirty three, cat power).

they say you have your whole life to make your first album, years upon years of growth, learning and experience filtered into one perfect record. your debut is supposed to be the one you labour over, while the follow-up is meant to be served up within spitting distance of the last. well, not if you’re london based wild palms. “we did that in reverse,” explains the band’s sardonic, quick-witted frontman lou hill. “the first album was just the songs that we would play live, we wrote it really quickly. but this one took ages...” five years in fact.
recorded by the band in the same self-built manor house studio where they made their 2011 de-but ‘until spring’, the new album ‘live together, eat each other’ is a lusciously layered offering of hazy experimentalism and off-kilter alt-pop, that follows in the auspicious lineage of beach house, cocteau twins and tv on the radio.

limitierte wiederveröffentlichung des 1996er albums “animal rights” als 180g schwere vinyl edition. bei erscheinen waren die moby fans irritiert, denn statt eines weiteren elektronik-albums wandte sich moby ohne vorwarnung dem alternative und punk-rock zu. in der rückschau passt dieses album jedoch perfekt in seine discographie und harmoniert mit seiner sozialisation und seinem weltbild. auf dem album covert moby mission of burmas thats when i reach for my revolver und entschließt sich nach veröffentlichung mit künstlern wie soundgarden und red hot chili peppers zu touren. auf dem cover ist moby zu sehen, nur zwei wochen alt, in den armen seines großvaters.

nobody can deny the fact that vilnius in lithuania is currently a very creative and agile place. first and foremost mario basanov of course, whose ten walls moniker swept the board last year and whose hype seems to have only just started. his popularity was heightened by the start of his own label boso. it took off with the highly praised -walking with elephants-, which was already one of the biggest tunes of this summer, before it even came out. the second release is by few nolder, another highly talented native from vilnius, who showed frst signs of life on connaisseur with his lovely tune -space espace- on our last edition of livingroom techno as well as with his remix for -canto d amore- by marco effe & francesco carone. -clouds- is the name of his boso release, and it looks to be the next big thing for this young label. for his frst own release on connaisseur he delivered -if-.the fact that it is different from his other output is why we have decided to present this tune in two versions as a 10- vinyl-only single. the original is a summerish and catchy house cut with a bouncy bassline and a slightly uk-approach.this tune makes you move without there being much you can do about it. the alt version goes deeper, building up with a question/answer theme until a strong, driving piano element joins to complete the track. lovers of older pokerflat releases will truly enjoy this version.
